When beginning tarot readings, it is best to start simple. The one-card spread is a simple and powerful spread. It is an accessible way to get to know the cards and yourself. You can use all the cards or categorise them into Major Arcana, Minor Arcana, the Court cards or the numbered cards.

How does a one card tarot layout work?
  1. Close your eyes and take a few deep, relaxing breaths in and out.

  2. Ask internally for spiritual guidance and direction for the day ahead.

  3. Shuffle the cards in a way you find most comfortable.

  4. Put the deck face down and draw a random card.

  5. Now look at the card as if you were looking at a large work of art. Observe the shapes, colours and images.

  6. If you like, you can write down the first thoughts and feelings that come to mind. Let the ideas come – by no means censor what comes to mind.

  7. Look up the card in the booklet that comes with the cards, and add any meanings or interpretations that come to mind to the list. Think about how these thoughts, feelings and questions might guide you during the day. You can write down your ideas if you like.

  8. Think about this card again during the coming day or event. Ask yourself if what you thought at the beginning of the day corresponded to what actually happened. Ask the card if it has any other messages for you. Add any additional insights to your list.

The point of a tarot reading is to look more closely at your thoughts, words and behaviour in the past and present. Through this understanding, you can become more aware of the potential outcome of your current thoughts, words and behaviour. Remember that what you think, say and do today will determine tomorrow.

It is a fallacy to think that the future is fixed. Of course, people and events may follow certain patterns, but you have one of the greatest freedoms there is: freedom of choice. The bottom line is that your present actions determine your future circumstances. What happens in your life depends largely on how you read and respond to the images that reflect life.

The tarot is a mirror that reflects your face!
