Reviews
An absolutely magical deck, which I would recommend to beginners as a second deck after the traditional Rider Waite-Smith. The images are a little different from RWS but close enough that you don't struggle to find the meanings. The images, the gold gilding and the card stock are all top notch. I received the 2017 First Edition and found the booklet to be very helpful. Each Major Arcana card has the astrological correspondence (planet or zodiac), a short but relevant card description, and upright and reversed meanings as keywords. The Minor Arcana cards, however, only have overarching information about the Suit, and keywords (upright and reversed) for each card. Nevertheless, I do find the keywords very suitable. I chose this deck over the newer Luna edition, because I prefer gold gilding to rainbow gilding, and I find the Hierophant card to be one of the most beautiful Hierophants I've ever seen. However, the Luna edition just replaces the Hierophant's human figure with a whisp of smoke or a cloud with a shooting star, which was personally very disappointing to me. As a non-white person, I appreciate Hughes making the Luna edition more inclusive of other skin tones, however, it was a complete letdown for me that my favorite card was changed so drastically. Do look at some flip-through videos before deciding about the Illuminated Tarot versus Luna Edition and decide which one speaks more to you.
