The dark season as an invitation to turn inward
The Dark Season as an Invitation to Turn Inward
The clocks go back, darkness falls early, and the evenings grow long. For many people that first feels like something to get through. Yet the dark season has something to offer too: it’s a natural invitation to slow down and turn inward.
In this article you’ll read how to accept that invitation, and how tarot can gently help you along. Because instead of fighting the dark months, you can also make use of them: as a resting point in the year, where you’re allowed to go inward rather than outward.
Why winter calls for rest
In nature, winter is a time of retreat. Trees are bare, animals hibernate, and everything seems to stand still for a while. Not because nothing is happening, but because beneath the ground plenty is resting and preparing for spring.
We humans tend to ignore that rhythm. We carry on at the same pace, with the same full schedule, and wonder why we feel so tired in November. But your body and mind often prefer to follow the season: a little slower, a little quieter, with more need for rest.
Turning inward isn’t standing still
Turning inward may sound passive, but it isn’t. It’s a moment to look back, to process and to feel where you stand. The dark months give you room for that, precisely because there’s less to do outside.
“Winter doesn’t call for action, but for attention.”
Turning inward with tarot: how to do it
You don’t need much for it. A deck, a quiet moment, and the willingness to sit still for a while. A few ways to use the dark season for reflection:
- Take stock of where you are: The start of winter is a good moment to survey where you stand right now. Draw a card with the question: “what may I carry into this season?” and a second with: “what may I let go of?”
- Make an evening into a ritual: Dark evenings lend themselves to candlelight, tea and quiet. Lay a card, write down what you feel, and leave it at that. You don’t have to solve anything; it’s about pausing for a moment.
- Ask gentle, inward-facing questions: Don’t ask “what should I do?”, but “what do I need right now?” or “where may I be kinder to myself?”
Let the darkness be
You don’t have to paper over the dark period with forced cheer. Just as dark tarot decks can bring calm because they don’t argue with your mood, the season too is allowed to be what it is. Sometimes it’s enough to acknowledge: it’s winter, I’m allowed to take it slower.
A small winter exercise
Want to try it right away? On a dark evening, find a quiet spot. Light a candle, draw one card, and ask yourself: “what do I want to give more room inside me this season?” Look at the image, take a breath, and write down one sentence.
That’s all. The dark season doesn’t ask you to reinvent yourself. It only asks you to turn inward for a moment, and listen to what’s waiting there for you.
