Before Tarot - the lead-up to the familiar image
Most tarot decks show a single frozen moment. This deck shows what happened just before. The Before Tarot takes the 78 cards of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot and steps back in time. You see the characters before they assume their iconic pose, before the event we all know takes place.
This is not a new interpretation of the tarot. It is a shift in perspective. Instead of the situation itself, you see the lead-up to it. The Five of Pentacles does not show the beggars in the snow, but what drove them in that direction. The Star does not show the woman by the water, but the moment just before she arrives there.
What you see on the cards
Eon Art Studio created the illustrations. The style stays close to the classic Rider-Waite imagery: clear lines, symbols you recognize, an atmosphere that feels familiar. Only the timing is different.
The colours are warm and bright. The cards are printed on sturdy cardstock with a lightly glossy finish. The format is 70 x 120 mm, which shuffles comfortably and remains easy to read during readings.
The guidebook of approximately 160 pages is written by Corrine Kenner. For each card she describes what happens in the image and how this affects the meaning. The text is clear and accessible, without unnecessary detours.
How you use this deck
The Before Tarot works well in readings where you want to understand how a situation came about. Not what is happening now, but what preceded it. Which choices were made, which actions led to this moment.
You can use the deck on its own, or lay it next to a traditional Rider-Waite deck. Some people combine it with the After Tarot to create a timeline: before, during and after.
Lay one card from the Before Tarot next to the same card from a classic deck. The difference in perspective often shows you exactly what you need to understand a question.

Questions we often get
Do I need to know the Rider-Waite system to use this deck?
No, you do not. The images stand on their own and the guidebook explains everything. It does help to recognize the cards if you know the classic version, because then you immediately see what is different.
What does this deck add compared to a regular Rider-Waite deck?
It gives context. Instead of only the situation itself, you also see how someone gets there. That makes readings about cause and effect, about choices and motivation, much sharper.
