Birds and chakras might sound like an unlikely pairing. Bastedo makes the connection specific: fifty bird species are distributed across the eight chakras, not at random, but according to the bird's colouring, habitat, or other characteristics. A Snowy Owl belongs somewhere different from an American Robin, and the guidebook explains why.
The deck contains 54 cards in total. Alongside the fifty bird cards, there is one card for each season, four in all. The illustrations by Heather Bale are printed in full colour. The included guidebook runs to 152 pages and is also fully illustrated in colour.
Each card pairs a bird illustration with a short, poetic text and factual information about that species. The guidebook develops this further: for each card you find spiritual messages, background on the associated chakra, and concrete meditation techniques. The writing is brief and direct, not philosophically heavy.
The eight chakras serve as the organising framework. For those already familiar with chakras, this provides a recognisable structure. For those less acquainted, the guidebook explains the mental and emotional significance of each chakra in straightforward terms.
The guidebook describes several ways to work with the cards: for daily meditation, for drawing a message, or simply to learn more about birds. Bastedo offers concrete ideas rather than rigid rituals.
The cards work outside formal meditation practice too. If you simply want to pause and reflect on the bird you saw that morning, these cards support that without requiring you to engage the full system.
Draw one card in the morning and read both the bird facts and the chakra message. You do not need to believe in chakras to find that the text points at something real.
Catherine C. Bastedo grew up in northwestern Ontario and holds an MA in Canadian Studies. She worked for many years at a senior level with the Canadian government and later served as executive director of an international nonprofit promoting Canadian studies. She then turned to writing and energy work. She teaches Reiki at all levels, has led workshops and retreats, and worked as a wellness coach for cancer survivors. She lives in Gatineau, Quebec.
Heather Bale created the illustrations. The cards are printed in full colour and depict the birds in a detailed, recognisable style.
Do I need prior knowledge of chakras to use this deck?
No. The guidebook explains the mental and emotional meaning of each chakra in accessible language. No background knowledge is required.
