Calandra Tarot - hand-painted fantasy with airbrush and acrylic
Most tarot cards get scanned, printed, published. This deck is different. Every card in the Calandra Tarot started as a physical painting, made with airbrush, acrylic paint and coloured pencil. That feeling of layer upon layer remains visible.
Michael Calandra works in the tradition of fantasy art: detailed, glowing, almost photorealistic. His style recalls the covers of science fiction novels from the eighties. Dreamlike but precise.
What you see on the cards
The deck follows the structure of the Rider-Waite system. The symbolism is recognisable. What differs is the execution: soft colour gradients, radiant points of light, depth in the compositions.
The borderless design amplifies that effect. Nothing holds the images back. The cards are longer than standard (70 x 127 mm), which gives the art more breathing room.
The deck includes two extra cards: 'As Above' and 'So Below'. They refer to the hermetic axiom about the connection between the celestial and the earthly. How to use them is explained in the guidebook.
Who this deck works for
This is a deck for those who love fantasy illustration. The images are not minimalist. They are full, colourful, technically well executed. That makes them accessible, but also very specific in style.
The guidebook is substantial (120 pages) and includes meanings, keywords and a special spread. That makes the deck usable for beginners. The symbolism aligns with the Rider-Waite tradition, so anyone familiar with that system can start working with it straight away.
Before a reading, draw either 'As Above' or 'So Below' to determine whether the focus should be on inner growth or material matters. That sets the direction for what follows.

Questions we often get
What is the difference between this deck and a classic Rider-Waite deck?
The symbolism follows the same structure, but the imagery is fantasy illustration rather than symbolist drawing. The deck also includes two extra cards that are not part of the standard tarot system.
What does a borderless design add?
Without a white border, the art flows all the way to the edge of the card. That increases the visual impact and makes it easier to read the cards side by side as one whole.
