Where the first deck in the Children of the Wheel series centred the animal kingdom, this second deck by Alexandria Huntington turns fully to plants. The cards show human figures grown together with flora in a literal sense: root systems entwined with hands, flowers opening from skulls, branches pushing through torsos. The imagery is dreamlike, at times dark, never merely decorative.

This deck won the 2025 Judges Choice Award at the International Carta Tarot Awards. Worth noting, not as a sales pitch, but because it reflects the consistency of the visual work across all 80 cards.

What you see on the cards

The structure follows Rider-Waite-Smith. Those familiar with that tradition will recognise the positions and arcana. But the traditional symbols have been replaced by botanical ones: each card carries a specific plant that shapes the meaning of that card. That makes this more than a themed variation on RWS.

The colours are vivid, the illustrations detailed. The included full-colour guidebook goes beyond standard card meanings: it also covers herbalism and spells that can support a reading. The plant symbolism is developed specifically for this deck, so the guidebook earns its place.

What the Limited Gold Edition includes

Alongside the standard 78 tarot cards, this edition contains two exclusive bonus cards: 'The Above' and 'The Below'. These cards are only included in this edition. Once sold out, the Limited Gold Edition will not be reprinted.

The cards have gilded edges and are printed on 350 gsm card stock with a matte finish. The hardcover flip box closes with a magnet and is finished with gold foil as well. On first use, the matte finish may cause cards to stick together slightly. A few thorough shuffles will sort that out.

The series behind this deck

The Children of the Wheel is a planned series of eight decks: four tarot and four oracle. Ostara is the second. Every deck in the series has its own illustrations but an identical card back. That means cards from The Children of Ostara and The Children of Litha can be mixed freely to build a personalised deck. This is a deliberate design choice by the creator.

If you already own The Children of Litha, place the card backs side by side. They match exactly, and combining cards from both decks is precisely what Huntington designed the series for.
