Mermaid Tarot - entirely hand-drawn, gold foil edges
Some decks take weeks to decide on. The Mermaid Tarot by Dame Darcy tends not to be one of them. Within an hour of seeing the cards, most people already know. That is not a marketing claim - it reflects something real about the artwork: every illustration is unmistakably personal, made by hand, and looks like nothing else on the market.
Dame Darcy kept the classic Rider-Waite structure intact but translated it entirely into her own visual language. Mermaids, sailors, drifting wrecks, and underwater figures take over from the familiar archetypes. Soft pastels and subtly faded vintage tones reference old nautical charts and hand-drawn posters from the 1960s. The result is a deck that reads intuitively for anyone familiar with Rider-Waite, but never looks generic.
What you see when the cards are in your hands
The cards measure 68 by 120 mm and sit comfortably in the hand. The edges are finished with a high-gloss gold foil - not a muted or matte gold, but a mirror-bright shine that catches the light when you shuffle. This latest printing has narrower borders around the images than earlier versions, giving the illustrations more room on the card surface. When you first open the box, the cards will not be in the standard Major and Minor Arcana order. That is intentional - it is how the maker packs them.
The rigid white box is clean and minimal. On a shelf, it gives very little away about what is inside.
Who is this deck for?
Because the Mermaid Tarot follows Rider-Waite conventions, any standard tarot guidebook works as a reference. No booklet is included in the box. Dame Darcy's own abbreviated guide is available online, and her separately sold reference work Daily Musings & Tarot Meanings provides more depth. The illustrations are layered and detailed, so some basic familiarity with tarot will help you get the most from them. This is not a simplified deck.
All 78 illustrations were drawn and painted by hand. No digital shortcuts, no AI involvement - each card carries the maker's handwriting visibly within it.
About Dame Darcy
Dame Darcy, born Darcy Megan Stanger, broke through at 21 with her underground comic series Meat Cake, published by Fantagraphics Books. She has since built a substantial body of work across books, graphic novels, music, and film. She collaborated with writer Alan Moore and created artwork for fashion designer Anna Sui. Her style is described as neo-Victorian, fairytale-inflected, and lightly dark. She lives and works in Savannah, Georgia. Alongside the Mermaid Tarot, she also designed the Queen Alice Tarot and the Witchy Cat Tarot.
