Tarot of Innocence - Disorder - minimalist tarot in black and white
Colour guides. It draws your attention, it calls up associations, it pushes you in a certain direction. This deck leaves colour out. What remains is line, contrast, light and shadow.
The Tarot of Innocence - Disorder is drawn by Diego Gabriele, an Italian artist who takes the structure of the Rider-Waite-Smith system as his base and reduces it to a raw, monochrome aesthetic. All 78 cards are rendered in black and white. The symbolism stays recognisable, but the execution is minimalist.
What you see on the cards
The drawing style is expressive and spare at the same time. Gabriele works with clear lines and often places figures in white against a black background, or the reverse. The emphasis lies on posture, facial expression and symbolic objects. No colour codes, no refined details in robes or landscapes.
That absence of colour forces you to look differently. You do not read the card through a rose that signals warmth or a blue sky that suggests calm. You see shapes, contrasts, and what a figure does or does not do. That makes the reading more direct, less pre-digested.
How this deck behaves in practice
The cards are printed on 350 gsm cardstock with a matte finish. They feel sturdy in the hand and shuffle smoothly. The format is standard (70 x 120 mm), comparable to a classic Rider-Waite deck.
Many people who use this deck notice that it helps with shadow work or with questions where you are not looking for a soft entry point. The monochrome aesthetic fits readings where honesty comes first.
Draw a card without further context and describe first what you see in contrast, not in meaning. That forces you to read the visual language anew.
About Diego Gabriele
Diego Gabriele lives and works in Tuscany. Since 2006 he has exhibited internationally, including in New York, Berlin and Paris. His work balances between fashion illustration and figurative art, with a focus on movement and emotion in spare lines.
For this tarot deck he chose black and white deliberately to restore the 'innocence' of the symbolism. No visual noise, no distracting colour choices. What remains is the archetypal core.
