In 1551, French artist Claude Paradin published his Devises heroïques - a collection of emblems pairing woodcut images with Latin or French mottos, intended as moral and symbolic wisdom. More than 475 years later, those same emblems form the basis of an oracle system. The Emblemata Oracle Companion Guidebook explains how that distance is crossed.
Written and curated by Nitasia Roland of Urania Press, this guidebook accompanies the 60-card Emblemata Oracle deck. These particular cards contain emblems that could not be included in the previously published Tarot Emblemata deck, making this oracle the completion of a larger project. The woodcuts were digitally restored and colorized from museum archive files, with careful attention to contrast, line quality, sharpness, and saturation.
Roland provides a divinatory interpretation for each emblem, using the original Latin and French mottos as a starting point. The emblems are not translated into a modern symbolic framework; instead, each image is allowed to function as its own independent oracular voice. The guidebook serves both as a practical divinatory reference and as an introduction to Renaissance emblems as a contemplative tradition.
This is not a booklet you read through once and set aside. The approach asks for a reader willing to sit with an image, let associations surface, and treat the text as a catalyst rather than a fixed answer. Nitasia Roland is the writer and curator behind both the Emblemata Oracle deck and this guidebook, published by Urania Press. She restored the woodcuts digitally from museum archive files and was responsible for the colorization. The expected publication date is 2026.
Can I use this guidebook without the Emblemata Oracle deck?
The guidebook is written specifically to accompany the 60-card deck. Without the cards, the visual layer that underpins each interpretation is missing. The two are designed to work together.
Do I need prior knowledge of Renaissance emblems or Claude Paradin?
No background knowledge is required. Roland's interpretations provide their own entry point into each emblem. That said, the approach favors patience and a reflective reading style over quick or keyword-driven answers.
