The Fifth Spirit Tarot - queer perspective on classic archetypes
Classic tarot cards often show one type of person. This deck does not. Charlie Claire Burgess draws people as they are: diverse in body, age, skin tone and gender expression. The structure remains recognisably Rider-Waite-Smith, but the imagery is different.
The Fifth Spirit Tarot consists of 78 cards on sturdy cardstock with a matte finish. The cards measure 70 x 120 mm and come with a 176-page guidebook in English. Published by The Word Witch, Charlie Claire Burgess's own platform.
What you see on the cards
Burgess draws with warm colours and soft lines. The figures have different postures, faces and ways of moving. That makes the archetypes more directly felt. The Empress can be a plus-size Black woman, the Magician a transitioned man.
The symbolism stays close to the original meanings. Pentacles, swords, wands and cups are recognisable. What changes is who holds them and what that looks like. This makes the deck accessible to people who know RWS, but also to those who never saw themselves in classic decks.
Who this works for
This deck is designed for people who want space in their tarot practice. Space for diversity, for different ways of being, for identities that are absent in many decks. The guidebook addresses this explicitly, without becoming dogmatic.
The matte finish makes the cards suitable for daily use. They shuffle smoothly and do not reflect light. The format is compact enough to hold comfortably during longer readings.
Draw one card as a daily card and pay specific attention to who you see on the card. How that person moves, stands or looks can be just as important as the classic symbol on the card.

Questions we often get
Does this deck deviate strongly from traditional Rider-Waite-Smith meanings?
No. The archetypes and symbols remain close to classic interpretations. What is different is who you see on the cards. The guidebook offers both traditional and expanded meanings.
Is the matte finish durable enough for frequent use?
Yes. The cards are printed on 400 gsm cardstock, which is sturdier than many standard tarot cards. The matte finish protects against fingerprints and wear.
