Gassman Tarot de Marseille - Swiss reproduction from 1840

Most Marseille decks trace back to French traditions. This one comes from Geneva and shows how Swiss cardmakers approached the system. François Gassman printed this deck in 1840, and Vieux Monde Express has reproduced it down to the smallest detail.

The cardstock has a linen finish, the cards are treated with a tea-stained effect to mimic the colour of aged paper, and the French titles remain as Gassman originally printed them. No modernisation, no interpretation. Just the most accurate reproduction possible.

What you see on the cards

The style is classic Marseille, with baroque ornamental lines that appear less often in the well-known French editions. The Major Arcana show the familiar figures, but with slightly more detail in clothing and backgrounds. The Minor Arcana work with symbols rather than scenes: staves, cups, swords and coins in stylised patterns.

The tea-stained finish makes the paper look older than it is. That can distract, but it also strengthens the feeling that you are working with a historical artefact. The colours are less vivid than in a modern printing, which adds calm to the imagery.

Who this deck works for

This is a deck for collectors and for those who want to see what the Marseille tradition looked like in Switzerland. If you know the French editions by Conver or Dodal, slightly different emphases stand out here.

Also usable for daily readings, as long as you are familiar with the Marseille system. The Minor Arcana contain no scenes, so you work with numbers, colours and symbolism. That requires interpretation, not reading stories.

Lay the cards out in warm light. The tea-stained finish absorbs cold light, which makes details disappear.

Questions we often get

How does this deck differ from a French Marseille edition?
The Swiss editions often contain slightly more baroque detail in the lines and ornamentation. The differences are subtle but visible if you place the cards side by side. The tea-stained finish is a choice by the publisher, not part of the original deck.

Is the booklet usable if I do not read French?
The booklet is entirely in French. If you already know the Marseille tradition, you can work without it. Otherwise you will need a separate source for the meanings.
