Happy Halloween Tarot - vintage spook art in candy-corn colours
Many Halloween decks lean into grim or gothic. This one leans into the cheerful spook of old postcards and paper decorations from the first half of the twentieth century. Orange, yellow and black dominate. The mood is nostalgic, not frightening.
Soni Graves has kept the full traditional tarot structure and changed everything around it. Court cards are gender-neutral, and the card titles are written in Spanglish, a blend of English and Spanish that reflects her own background. That is a deliberate choice, and it gives this deck its own voice.
What you see on the cards
The illustrations reference vintage Halloween prints: witches, skeletons, pumpkins and black cats in situations any tarot reader will recognise immediately. The Fool walks toward the cliff, the Hanged Man hangs upside down, the Tower falls. The symbolism holds. The execution is festive.
Only the clothing, backgrounds and details differ. A witch instead of an emperor. A skeleton instead of a hermit. The cards have a linen finish and grey borders, the standard tarot size of 70 x 121 mm, and they shuffle smoothly. The sturdy two-piece box holds both cards and guidebook comfortably.
What the Spanglish titles actually do
Spanglish is not a stylistic quirk. The Fool becomes 'El Fool', the Moon becomes 'La Moon'. That pairing of languages brings Graves's cultural background directly into the deck without reducing readability. Anyone familiar with standard tarot names will recognise every title at a glance.
The gender-neutral court cards work in the same way: the traditional structure stays in place, but the fixed male-female roles of King, Queen, Knight and Page are replaced by designations that are more broadly applicable for personal reflection and readings.
How you work with it
The 128-page guidebook explains each card and includes spreads suited to the harvest season. That makes the deck accessible to beginners. The imagery is also rich enough to offer something to experienced readers.
The themes of Halloween centre on the thin place between worlds, honouring ancestors, and sitting with shadow. Those elements are built into this deck. You can work with it around Samhain, or use it year-round if the aesthetic appeals to you.
Pull three cards for a Shadow and Light spread: what you may release, what is drawing closer, what hidden talent wants to be seen. The guidebook describes this and other spreads matched to the energy of the season.

Questions we often get
What does Spanglish mean exactly on the cards?
The titles combine English and Spanish. The Fool is called 'El Fool', the Moon becomes 'La Moon'. It is a choice that brings the creator's cultural background into the deck without limiting readability. Anyone who knows standard tarot names will recognise every card straight away.
How do the gender-neutral court cards work in practice?
Graves replaces the traditional King, Queen, Knight and Page designations with titles not tied to fixed male or female roles. The four-level court structure remains intact; the framing is more open.
