Lovecraft Tarot - 78 cards drawn from Lovecraft's dark fiction
H.P. Lovecraft wrote about forces and creatures beyond human understanding. The Lovecraft Tarot takes that world and maps it directly onto a full 78-card tarot structure. It is a redesigned edition of the earlier Dark Grimoire Tarot, republished by Lo Scarabeo.
All illustrations are by Michele Penco. His images show strange beings, brutal landscapes and dark rituals that sit squarely within the atmosphere of Lovecraft's writing. This is not a deck built on soft tones or accessible symbolism. The mood is heavy and unrelenting.
What you see on the cards
All 78 cards are full-colour and fully illustrated. The standard tarot structure holds: 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana. The imagery, however, is entirely reshaped around the Lovecraftian cosmos. Readers familiar with his stories will recognise the figures and settings immediately.
The visual tone is considerably darker than most RWS-based decks. Anyone accustomed to pastel palettes and gentle symbolism will find the opposite here.
The story behind this deck
Valentina Camerini wrote the texts in the included instruction booklet, drawing on Lovecraft's work to connect his fiction to the meanings of the individual cards. The booklet is compact and does not function as a full guidebook.
Lo Scarabeo, the Italian publisher behind this deck, has a long track record with thematic tarot decks. The Lovecraft Tarot is scheduled for release on 8 April 2026.
If you know Lovecraft's stories, you will recognise the imagery right away. If you do not, the atmosphere is strong enough to carry the cards on its own.
