Magic Spells Oracle - 36 cards rooted in historical spell traditions
Not every oracle works on intuition alone. The Magic Spells Oracle by Judika Illes is built on historical research, traditional spell knowledge and the elemental forces of Air, Earth, Fire and Water. Drawing these cards means stepping into a system that functions more like a magical reference framework than a purely intuitive tool.
Illes is the author of the Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells, Encyclopedia of Spirits, and several other books on witchcraft and the magical arts. She describes herself as a lifelong student and practitioner. That depth of knowledge is present throughout this deck.
What you see on the cards
The deck contains 36 full-colour cards in a manageable size. They are organised by the four elements: Air, Earth, Fire and Water. Each card is grounded in a specific spell, historical practice or traditional belief.
This is not a visual oracle where the illustration carries the meaning on its own. The substance sits underneath, in the written context the guidebook provides. The cards work as entry points into a broader system.
The guidebook
The accompanying guidebook runs to 128 pages and is dense with content. Alongside card descriptions, it explains how to set up a home altar, how to charge the oracle, and how to work with layouts. The writing is thorough and grounded in historical detail.
That makes the guidebook valuable for anyone who wants to understand the background. It also means the deck asks something of the reader: quick pulls or immediate intuitive answers are less straightforward here. You read, process, and then connect.
How this deck is designed to be used
This deck is aimed at people who approach magic as a serious practice, with an interest in folklore, spell work and the history of magical traditions. The guidebook expects curiosity and a willingness to read.
Anyone used to a fast oracle for daily single-card draws will find a different experience here. This deck rewards preparation and attention.
Use this deck when you want to investigate a question, not just answer it. The cards give the most back when you take time to read the context in the guidebook alongside them.
