Motherpeace Tarot Deck Standard Edition - round cards that break patriarchal structures
Rectangular tarot cards have a top and a bottom. These do not. The Motherpeace Tarot, created by Karen Vogel and Vicki Noble, uses round cards to break the linear hierarchy of traditional tarot. The circle represents cycle, wholeness, the moon, the seasons.
The deck was developed in the 1970s and is considered one of the first and most influential feminist tarot decks. The focus lies on divine feminine energy, not as a counterpart to the masculine, but as a full, autonomous spiritual source.
What you see on the cards
The drawing style is primitive and expressive. Women of different ages, body types and cultural backgrounds take centre stage. The imagery reinterprets classic tarot symbolism through a feminist lens: the four suits are represented by powerful goddesses such as Aphrodite and Athena.
The art is not polished. That is a choice. The style recalls ancient rock art, folk art and matriarchal symbolism from different cultures. Some people find it dated, others timeless.
Because the cards are round, they can fall at different angles during a reading. A card that stands upright, reversed or somewhere in between signals subtle shifts in energy. There is no hard yes or no, no rigid good or bad.
How you work with them
Working with round cards takes some getting used to. You cannot automatically see which side is 'up'. That is precisely the point. The shape forces you to look differently, more slowly, more intuitively.
Many people pay attention to the direction in which characters are looking or to the angle at which the card lies. A card that 'tilts' towards another card can point to a transition or a specific influence between two areas of life.
If you are used to rectangular cards, lay out a few readings first without looking at the interpretations. Let the shape and imagery speak to you before you analyse.
About Karen Vogel and Vicki Noble
Karen Vogel is an intuitive artist and drew the cards. Vicki Noble is a feminist healer, author and teacher, known for her pioneering work in female shamanic practices. Together they created a deck in 1981 that has served as a source of inspiration for tarot readers worldwide for decades.
Noble later wrote a comprehensive book to accompany the deck, exploring the symbolism and philosophy in much greater depth. That book is sold separately and goes far beyond the enclosed 34-page booklet.

Questions we often get
What is the advantage of round cards compared to rectangular ones?
The round shape removes the rigid interpretation of upright or reversed. Instead you get a fluid scale of energy. A card can tilt slightly, which allows for a more subtle reading than the hard division of traditional tarot.
Is this deck only intended for women?
The deck centres female energy and history, but the themes are universal. Emotion, intellect, passion and manifestation are not gender-related. The deck works for anyone who wants to strengthen intuition and cyclical thinking.
