My Friend Fire - hand-illustrated oracle cards in five suites
My Friend Fire is the first companion oracle to the Gentle Tarot by illustrator Mari Hulick. It is not a replacement deck but an extension: 60 cards that share the same foundation as the Gentle Tarot, with mental health and personal growth at the centre, and work that out through their own distinct structure.
The cards are divided into five suites, each with a colour border: green for Listening, blue for Nourishment, orange for Expansion, coral for Reflection, and purple for Transformation. Five borderless bonus cards and two cards with black and white borders, inspired by the bonus Major Arcana from the Gentle Tarot, round out the set. The suites follow a sequence that moves through healing and change, and each suite has its own internal progression.
What you see on the cards
Mari Hulick illustrates by hand, and her work is rooted in flora, fauna and folklore. The card titles are descriptive and deliberately chosen, which means the cards communicate something even before you open the guidebook. The full-colour guidebook includes a description for each card, but anyone comfortable with symbolic imagery will find their way without it.
The First Edition is printed on 350gsm art paper with a matte, anti-scratch laminate finish, matte gold-gilded edges, and gold stamping on the card backs and box. The card size is 70 x 120 mm, standard tarot size. The Luxe Linen Edition is slightly smaller at 70 x 105 mm, printed on 330gsm German Black Core paper with a poker-butter finish and a linen texture.
How the deck is structured
The five suites run in sequence from Listening to Transformation. That makes it possible to use the deck at random or as a deliberate progression through stages. The structure suits someone already thinking about change and looking for a framework to move through it.
The cards carry symbols tied to the natural world and to inner processes. Hulick describes her approach as a gentle decolonising of card reading, keeping connection to nature as the starting point for reflection rather than a fixed system of meanings.
The card titles are specific enough to give direction on their own. If you are not sure where to begin, start with the Listening suite and work through from there.
About Mari Hulick
Mari Hulick works under the name Mari in the Sky and publishes her decks independently through Kickstarter. That keeps full creative control with her, from the illustrations to the paper stock and edge finish. My Friend Fire came out in 2025 as her most limited print run to date: 2,690 copies of the First Edition and 2,920 of the Luxe Linen Edition.
Her work brings together illustration, nature and intuitive self-reflection. The Gentle Tarot, of which this is a companion, is the foundation she is building her series on.

Questions we often get
Do I need the Gentle Tarot to use this deck?
No. My Friend Fire has its own structure and its own guidebook. The Gentle Tarot is not a requirement. The deck is designed in the same spirit and fits alongside it naturally if you have both, but it stands on its own.
What is the difference between the First Edition and the Luxe Linen Edition?
The First Edition is printed on 350gsm art paper with a matte laminate and measures 70 x 120 mm. The Luxe Linen Edition is printed on 330gsm German Black Core paper with a linen texture and measures 70 x 105 mm. Both editions have matte gold-gilded edges and gold stamping on the card backs and box.
