The Pre-Raphaelite Tarot is a 78-card deck illustrated by Italian artist Luigi Costa. The cards follow the Rider-Waite-Smith structure and are painted in the style of the Pre-Raphaelite art movement, a nineteenth-century current that centred on medieval themes, expressive figures and richly detailed natural settings.
The imagery draws from chivalric legends, myths and the early Renaissance. Figures with long red hair, chalices, swords and moonlit landscapes appear in warm tones of gold, green and red.
Card XVIII shows two female figures in a garden beneath a large, full yellow moon, with towers visible in the background. Card XIII depicts a female figure lying in water among plants and branches, in muted greens and browns. Card I shows a female figure with long red hair in a green dress, holding a sword upright, with a table bearing a chalice, an apple and bread in the foreground.
All card backs share the same decorative pattern: peacock feathers, flowers, birds and candelabras in green, gold, red and blue. The box is dark blue with a painted winged figure holding a golden chalice on the front.
Because the cards follow Rider-Waite-Smith symbolism, someone new to tarot will find the imagery relatively straightforward to read. The guidebook explains card meanings and a number of basic spreads in five languages. The deck works well for daily pulls, meditative sessions and longer spreads on life themes.
Luigi Costa is an Italian artist known for detailed illustrations that combine historical art movements with esoteric symbolism. Alongside the Pre-Raphaelite Tarot, he created the Mystical Tarot.
Is this deck suitable for beginners?
Yes. The cards follow the Rider-Waite-Smith structure, so the symbolism will be familiar to anyone who has worked with that tradition before.
