Rainbow Moon Tarot - inclusive deck with imaginative imagery
Not every tarot deck wants to be traditional. This one deliberately chooses a different path: no medieval court scenes, no fixed gender roles, no limited range of skin tones. The Rainbow Moon Tarot shows what a deck looks like when it makes room for everyone.
Sam Rook drew 78 cards with figures that are diverse in body, gender and expression. The colours are bright and dreamlike, the compositions full of detail. The format is large enough to actually see those details: 115 x 170 mm per card.
What you see on the cards
The foundation is the Rider-Waite structure, but the execution differs significantly. Rook replaced the classic figures with characters you do not often encounter in tarot. Gender-neutral royalty, diverse bodies, alternative family forms. That is not a statement, that is simply what is depicted.
The style is artistic and imaginative. Warm colours dominate, especially orange, pink and purple. The backgrounds are soft and dreamlike, giving the cards an airy quality. No dark shadow sides here, but also no superficial cheerfulness.
The 144-page guidebook gives an explanation for each card, plus background on how Rook translated the symbolism. There are also some spreads, though the emphasis lies on encouraging your own interpretation.
How you work with it
This deck asks you to look first before you read. The images are rich enough to trigger your own associations. Pick a card, observe the colours and forms, and notice what comes up. That is not a trick, that is how the deck is designed.
Because of the large format, the cards lie prominently in a spread. That works well for meditation or moments when you want to give full attention to a single card. Less practical for travelling, unless you have large hands or a large bag.
Draw a card and place it in front of you without reaching for the guidebook. Observe which colour stands out most. That can tell you just as much as the traditional meaning.

Questions we often get
Does this deck follow the Rider-Waite structure?
Yes, the basic structure is the same: 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana divided over four suits. The imagery is entirely its own, however.
Are the cards suitable for daily use despite the large format?
That depends on your preference. The format makes the cards visually impressive, but less easy to shuffle than standard size. For home use or meditative spreads it works excellently.
