Some oracle sets start with a concept. This one started with a book series. Steven Hutton drew and wrote three volumes about the Wildwood witches, a community that lives within the cycle of the seasons and natural magic. The Raven's Wand Oracle brings that world into a card set.
The 44 cards each represent a character, animal or theme from the trilogy. If you know the books, you will recognise the stories immediately. If you do not, the cards work on their own: each image carries its own meaning that you can access through the guidebook or your intuition.
The illustrations are digitally drawn, rich in detail and colour. Hutton works with warm tones, lots of green and brown, and faces that look directly at you. Each character is drawn with attributes that refer to their role in the coven: herbs, wands, animals, elements.
The cards are printed on sturdy card stock with a smooth, silky finish. They shuffle easily and feel pleasant in the hand. The format is compact enough to carry daily.
The 128-page guidebook describes each character with a short background and an interpretation for readings. The texts are warm and accessible, no esoteric jargon. You read who the person is, what they represent, and how you can recognise that energy in your own life.
This is not tarot. There is no fixed structure, no arcana, no order you need to know. That makes it suitable for those who prefer to work freely with images and stories rather than with a system.

Steven Hutton has been working on the universe of the Wildwood witches since 2007. He illustrates, writes and continues to develop the world. His style is recognisable: detailed, warm and with attention to facial expressions and natural elements.
Besides the trilogy he has created several decks and art books within the same universe. This oracle is his most accessible work: you do not need to know the books to use the cards.
Do I need to have read the Dark Raven Chronicles to use this deck?
No. The cards work on their own. The guidebook provides enough context to understand each character and symbol without knowing the books.
Is this a tarot deck or an oracle deck?
An oracle deck. There is no fixed structure as with tarot. You draw cards based on your question and interpret them through the images and the guidebook.
