Shadowscapes Tarot

Stephanie Pui-Mun Law painted this deck in watercolour: flowing lines, layered colour gradients and minute details that only reveal themselves when you hold the cards up close. The structure follows the classic Rider-Waite-Smith layout, but the imagery translates it into a world of faeries, dragons, nymphs and animal guides. Tarot author Barbara Moore wrote the 264-page guidebook.

  • Language: English (cards and guidebook)

Shadowscapes Tarot - watercolour RWS deck by Law and Moore

This deck rewards slow looking. Not because it is complicated, but because Stephanie Pui-Mun Law painted her watercolours in so many layers that something new appears with every pass. Hidden animals, figures dissolving into the background, details that only surface when you actually hold the card.

Shadowscapes Tarot is published by Llewellyn Publications and brings together two collaborators: Law as illustrator and Barbara Moore as tarot author. Moore is one of the most prolific tarot writers in the US, and she wrote a 264-page guidebook specifically for this deck.

What you see on the cards

The illustrations are painted in soft, warm watercolour tones with flowing lines and layered gradients. The imagery draws on Asian, Celtic and Western fantasy traditions. Faeries, dragons, nymphs and animal figures take the place of the classic RWS characters, but the symbolic content stays recognisable.

The Minor Arcana uses fixed animal motifs for each suit: sea serpents and mermaids for Cups, birds and swans for Swords, felines and foxes for Wands, tree spirits and forest creatures for Pentacles. These choices are not decorative; they connect directly to the elements water, air, fire and earth.

Classic structure, a world of its own

The deck contains 78 cards and follows the Rider-Waite-Smith structure closely: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. Anyone who has worked with an RWS deck will recognise the card positions and the logic of the suits immediately. The familiar structure makes the deck approachable, even if Law's visual style is new to you.

Barbara Moore's guidebook covers each card thoroughly: meaning, symbolism and explanation of the visual choices. It also includes spreads. Both the guidebook and the card titles are entirely in English.

Look at the cards with a magnifying glass. The fine watercolour details contain hidden symbols and narrative elements that are easy to miss when you flip through quickly.
