Slavic Folklore Lenormand - Palekh miniatures on black backgrounds
Lenormand cards are a practical reading system: 36 cards, clear meanings, quick answers. This deck shows that clarity can wear a very different coat.
Faina Lorah painted all the cards in the style of Palekh miniatures, a Russian art form recognizable by detailed figures on a black ground. Where classic Lenormand cards tend to be light and straightforward, this deck chooses depth and drama. The sparing use of colour, mostly gold, red and white, gains extra strength from the black.
What you see on the cards
Each of the 36 symbols has been translated into a figure, object or scene from Slavic folklore. The Rider becomes a character from an old tale, the Tower a structure that fits Eastern European legends. The proportions and poses are stiffer than in contemporary illustration. That belongs to the vintage style.
The black background affects how you read the cards. Instead of an airy image you can take in at once, each card asks you to pause. The figures seem to glow out of the darkness.
The instruction booklet gives keywords and meanings for each card. No elaborate stories, but enough to work with directly if you already know how Lenormand functions.
How this deck relates to classic Lenormand
The structure is traditional: the same 36 cards, the same order, the same method of combination. What differs is the atmosphere. Where a classic deck can feel light and approachable, this one chooses mystery and depth.
That makes it less suitable as a first deck. If you have never worked with Lenormand before, a clear edition with straightforward imagery will likely be more practical. But if you already know the method and are looking for visual language that leaves more room for association, this approach works well.
Lay the cards on a dark surface. It strengthens the effect of the black backgrounds and makes the figures stand out even more.

Questions we often get
Are the card meanings different from a classic Lenormand deck?
No. The symbolism follows the standard Lenormand system. Only the imagery has been adapted to Slavic folklore and the Palekh style.
Is the black background difficult when reading larger spreads?
That depends on your preference. Some readers find the dark cards calming in a large spread, others miss the light clarity. Try laying the cards on a neutral or light surface if you find the black becomes too much.
