Tarot de A.E. Waite Pocket Blue Edition Portuguese - Rider-Waite in pocket size
This is one of the most printed tarot decks in the world, now in a format that fits in any jacket pocket. The imagery is that of Pamela Colman Smith from 1909. The cards are smaller than standard, but the symbolism remains intact.
This edition is published by AGM Urania in Portuguese. The backs are blue instead of the familiar yellow. The cardstock has a matte finish, which shuffles well.
What you see on the cards
All 78 cards follow Smith's original design. The colours are soft, the lines clear. Every minor arcana card is fully illustrated, which was new at the time and has since become standard.
The cards carry Portuguese titles. This applies to the major arcana and the court cards. The 96-page guidebook is also in Portuguese and contains basic interpretations plus a number of spreads.
Size and use
At 57 x 89 mm, the cards are nearly half the size of a standard Rider-Waite. That makes them suitable for small hands or for those with limited space. They are less suited to large reading tables, but work well for a daily draw or a three-card spread.
The cardstock is sturdy enough to withstand regular use. The matte finish prevents glare and feels more pleasant than gloss.
Store the cards in the original box. It is small, sturdy and protects the deck well in a bag.
About Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith
Arthur Edward Waite was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and wrote on occultism and mysticism. He designed the structure of this deck and commissioned Pamela Colman Smith to draw the cards.
Smith worked as an illustrator and theatre designer in London. She drew all 78 cards in less than a year, using watercolour and ink. Her work remains the standard for modern tarot.
