Some tarot decks let you recognise. This one makes you look, look again, and only then recognise. The Tarot of the Longest Dream takes the familiar structure of Rider-Waite and moves it into a world where the logic of dreams applies.

Florentine illustrator Roberto Innocenti draws each card as if it were a film still: with depth, perspective, and details you only see on the third look. Rachel Paul wrote the text and kept the tarot structure intact. Together they shaped a deck that is visually complex but symbolically true to tradition.

What you see on the cards

The scenes are surreal, not abstract. You recognise the meanings from Rider-Waite, but the settings have shifted: a figure does not stand in a landscape but in a space that is both inside and outside at once. Colours are muted, architecture seems impossible, shadows fall the wrong way.

Each image contains layers. A doorway in the background. A mirror showing something other than what stands before it. An object that stays just out of focus. They are not decorations. They are clues.

The cards measure 65 x 118 mm, a standard size that shuffles easily. The print is sharp enough to show the details without becoming busy.

This deck asks for a different way of reading. Not: what does this card mean? But: what do I see here, and what does that call up? The symbolism is Rider-Waite, so you can read the cards as you are used to. But the images force you to work intuitively.

Beginners can work with it if they already have some tarot experience. The guidebook is multilingual, including English, and describes the meanings clearly. But the strength of the deck does not lie in the text. It lies in how the images let you feel what you already know.

Draw one card in the morning and place it beside you. Look at it a few times without looking anything up. Often the image itself is answer enough.
