Some decks replace the human figures from the Rider-Waite with something else. This deck chooses cats. Not symbolic cats, but cats that literally take over the role of the characters: they wear robes, hold cups, sit on thrones.
The result is a deck that feels familiar in structure but softer in energy. The illustrations are warm in colour, the lines fluid, the backgrounds filled with subtle pagan symbols such as moons, stars and natural elements.
Each card follows the layout of the classic Rider-Waite, but drawn with cats in the lead role. The Chariot shows a cat on a chariot, the High Priestess sits between pillars, the Fool stands at the edge of a cliff. The symbolism remains intact.
Lola Airaghi's drawing style is detailed without becoming busy. The cats have expression, the colours are saturated but not loud. Lots of gold, red, blue and green. The backgrounds contain pagan elements such as pentagrams, herbs and ritual objects, but they do not impose themselves.
The cardstock is sturdy and smooth, with a light gloss. The cards measure 66 x 120 mm, a standard size that shuffles comfortably. The guidebook is multilingual and contains basic instructions and brief meanings for each card.
Because the structure is classic, you can read this deck as you would a Rider-Waite. The cats do not change the symbolism, they give it a different tone. Where a human character sometimes creates distance, a cat feels more direct.
The deck works well for daily draws and for people who want to learn the Rider-Waite structure without the seriousness of a traditional deck. The energy is lighter, but not superficial.
Draw a card and watch how the cat behaves. Is it sitting still, moving, looking at you? That posture often says more than the symbolism in the background.
Magdelina Messina conceived the concept for this deck. Lola Airaghi drew the cards. Her style is soft and mystical, with attention to detail and colour. Together they created a deck that makes the Rider-Waite structure accessible without simplifying it.
Does the symbolism deviate from the Rider-Waite?
No. The cards follow the classic layout. The human figures have been replaced by cats, but the attributes, postures and backgrounds remain the same. You can read this deck with knowledge of the Rider-Waite.
Are the pagan symbols prominently present?
They are visible but subtle. Pentagrams, moons and herbs appear in backgrounds and details, not as main elements. The focus is on the cats and their actions.
