The Classic Tarot - Italian tradition from 1894
Most classical decks follow Rider-Waite-Smith. This one does not. The Classic Tarot draws on the Italian tarot tradition of the late nineteenth century, a direction less widely known but visually richer.
The deck goes back to designs by Giovanni Vacchetta, an Italian artist and mathematician who in 1894 developed a tarot set with emphasis on refinement and precision. This reissue by Lo Scarabeo respects that original etching art: calm lines, soft tones, no modern colouring.
What you see on the cards
The cards are rendered in muted colours: much beige, soft blue, pastel pink. The lines are fine and technical, almost as if engraved. Each figure stands clearly defined, without much background detail.
The symbolism follows the western esoteric tradition, but the imagery has its own character. Less drama than in the Rider-Waite deck, more emphasis on composition and balance. That makes the cards calmer, but no less telling.
How this deck is used
The structure is clear. All 78 cards are present, the layout is traditional. That makes it accessible for those who already work with tarot and want a different perspective without abandoning the system.
The deck communicates directly. The images are not crowded, the messages come through without much detour. That works well for daily draws or spreads where you want to see quickly where the emphasis lies.
Lay out a single card and look first at the lines before you look up the meaning. The composition often tells enough on its own.

Questions we often get
How does this deck differ from Rider-Waite-Smith?
This deck comes from the Italian tarot tradition, not the Anglo-Saxon one. The style is more classical, the colours softer, the lines more technical. The symbolism follows the same western base, but the execution is different.
Are the cards suitable for intensive use?
Yes. The cardstock is sturdy and the matte coating ensures the cards do not stick during shuffling. They sit comfortably in the hand.
