Product information

Folklore Oracle - folk symbolism in soft, earthy illustration

Folk tales rarely hinge on the hero or the villain. They hinge on the spinning wheel, the well, the forest, the magic word. The Folklore Oracle is built around exactly those details: not the familiar archetypes we have seen a hundred times, but the objects and phenomena that actually turn the story.

The cards are illustrated by Giada Rose, who previously illustrated the first three Seasons of the Witch decks, and written by Hadas Knox. Published by Rockpool Publishing, the set comes in a well-constructed box with a brown band and a full-colour guidebook of 112 pages.

What you see on the cards

The illustrations are soft and dreamy, with an earthy palette of muted tones. Nothing is harsh or overwhelming. There is a faint haunting quality to the work that lifts it beyond decorative. The card backs carry a motif that fits the folklore theme throughout.

The standout physical detail is the gilding: a yellowish spring green that contrasts sharply with the off-white, slightly pink-tinted card stock. The cards are matte and shuffle smoothly, gliding rather than catching.

What the guidebook contains

The guidebook includes an introduction, instructions for using the cards, and three spreads. Each individual card comes with a question that functions as a journal prompt. Rockpool prints a full-colour design across the background of every page, which gives the guidebook a noticeably different feel from a plain white-paper booklet.

That question per card is the strongest element of this system. Pull the same card several times and you can track how your answer shifts. That makes it useful for anyone who wants to follow how certain themes move through their life over time.

What sets this deck apart

The cards deliberately avoid the worn figures of folklore: no damsel in distress, no white knight, no wicked queen. Instead they centre on objects and phenomena that actually change the course of a story: the mirror, the moon, the forest path, the edge of the unconscious.

That is a conscious choice by Knox and Rose, and it holds up. The deck feels fresh, even for someone who has worked with oracle cards for years.

Pull one card each day and write down your answer to the question on the card. After a month, look back. The same card, pulled four times, will likely produce four different answers.

About Giada Rose and Hadas Knox

Giada Rose illustrated the first three Seasons of the Witch decks, Samhain, Yule and Beltane, building a recognisable style: soft, atmospheric, earthy without being heavy. The Folklore Oracle is her fourth major project in this space.

Hadas Knox wrote the card texts. The descriptions frame each symbol as a key to an aspect of the psyche, drawing on an archetypal tradition that will be familiar to readers of depth psychology.

Questions we often get

What language are the cards and guidebook in?
Everything is in English: the card names, the guidebook and the question on each card. No other language edition is available.

How does this compare to the Seasons of the Witch decks by the same illustrator?
The Seasons of the Witch decks are each tied to a seasonal festival. The Folklore Oracle is thematically broader, drawing on folk tales, superstition and regional tradition without a fixed seasonal frame. Giada Rose's illustration style is recognisable across both, but the system and symbolism are set up differently.
