The Magic Gate Tarot - occultism, astrology and metaphysics in one deck
This is a visually dense deck. Vera Petruk uses symbols from esoteric traditions and weaves them together with astrological and metaphysical references. That makes it not a beginner deck, but a deck that rewards slow looking.
The cards are larger than standard (76 x 127 mm) and have black gilded edges. That gives the whole thing a ceremonial character. The details in the illustrations are fine, sometimes overlapping, and ask for attention.
What you see on the cards
The imagery draws from old occult sources. You see celestial bodies, geometric forms, figures in ritual postures. The symbolism is layered: one card can refer to an astrological principle, an alchemical phase and a metaphysical concept at the same time.
The colours are intense, the compositions full. Each card contains multiple focal points. That makes them suitable for meditation, less so for quick daily draws.
How the cards feel
Because of the black gilded finish, the cards can stick together a bit at first. That disappears after a few shuffles. The edge can give off slightly at first, which is normal for this type of finish.
The oversized format asks for larger hands or a different shuffling technique. Many people lay the cards out on a table and mix them there, rather than shuffling them between their hands.
Rub the cards one by one between your fingers when you first use them to loosen the edges. It takes a few minutes, but after that they slide smoothly.

Questions we often get
Why do the cards stick together at first?
That is because of the black gilded finish. After a few shuffles it disappears. You can also manually rub the cards one by one, which speeds up the process.
Does the black edge come off on your hands?
That can happen slightly at first. It is a characteristic of the gilded production method. After a few uses it stops.
