Some tarot cards are illustrations. These are artworks that happen to also be tarot cards. Salvador Dalí completed this deck in 1984, after years of work in which he treated each card as a full painting.

This Gold Edition is distinguished by gilt edges on all four sides of every card. The format is large: 79 x 140 mm. That is considerably bigger than standard tarot cards and allows you to see the details as Dalí intended them.

What you see on the cards

Dalí based himself on the structure of classical tarot, but rebuilt each archetype from his own surrealist vocabulary. The Magician bears his face. The Sun floats above a landscape that is both recognisable and impossible. Hebrew letters and alchemical symbols are woven into the compositions.

The cards are titled bilingually, in English and Spanish. Astrological associations are noted where Dalí considered them relevant. The visual language is dense: many details, little empty space, a preference for gold, blue and ochre yellow.

The gilt edges give the deck a shimmer that stands out during shuffling. It is a detail that matches the ambition of the project.

How this deck relates to classical tarot

The structure follows the Tarot de Marseille and the esoteric traditions of the Golden Dawn, but the imagery deviates strongly from Rider-Waite or other common decks. Those accustomed to recognisable scenes and postures must learn to look anew here.

That makes this deck less suitable as a first tarot. It works better for those who already have experience with card reading and now seek a different visual entry point.

The deck includes a hardcover guidebook of 184 pages, written by tarot expert Johannes Fiebig. The book describes each card and places Dalí's choices in the context of both tarot tradition and art history.

Fiebig explains where Dalí deviates and why. That helps to read the cards without forcing the meaning into a classical framework.
