Gothic and cute rarely share the same space. The Soul's Haven Tarot commits to that tension deliberately: fragile, youthful figures in scenes that do not shy away from grief, suppression and the long work of recovery. It sounds uneasy until you hold the cards.
The deck was designed by JuJu, an illustrator and self-described tarot enthusiast. She built it on the Rider-Waite-Smith structure and gave each card its own visual interpretation. The underlying theme is what the maker calls 'softness behind armour': figures who push back against what constrains them and search for their true selves.
What you see on the cards
The style is digitally painted, with rich colours and a distinct emotional weight per card. The figures are young and fine-lined, but the subject matter runs deep. Wounds, expectation, personal power and healing return across the deck. The visual language holds melancholy and tenderness in deliberate balance.
The Minor Arcana is designed as a panorama. Lay all fourteen cards of one suit in sequence and the backgrounds form a single continuous scene. Each suit has its own landscape that unfolds from left to right. This is a visual concept you rarely encounter in tarot card design.
Alongside the 78 standard cards, the deck includes a bonus card called 'Introspect'. English card titles are printed at the bottom of each image. The entire deck is hand-drawn, with no AI generation.
How it feels in use
The cards measure 70 x 120 mm, a compact size that sits well in the hand. The stock is 330 gsm with a black core, making the cards sturdy and flexible. The air-cushion finish gives the cards a smooth glide when shuffling, close to the feel of professional playing cards. The edges are gilded.
The packaging is a rigid two-part box with a separate lid and base, finished with matte lamination and foil print. An English guidebook is included, covering card meanings and the symbolism of the illustrated scenes.
