Kim Krans drew all 78 cards by hand, in black-and-white line art with deliberate splashes of colour. Animals and plants take the place of the traditional human figures. The set includes a 208-page hardcover guidebook, fully illustrated and written by Krans herself.

The Wild Unknown Tarot is a 78-card deck drawn entirely by hand by Kim Krans. The style is spare: black-and-white line work with targeted colour accents on specific symbolic elements. Where other decks show kings and queens, this one places animals and natural forms - a swan, a bear, a pine tree - in those same roles.
The deck follows the traditional 78-card structure, with a Major and Minor Arcana. The suits and court positions remain, but the imagery speaks through the natural world rather than historical or religious references.
The box is matte black. On the front is a circular motif built from black-and-white stripes and feathers, ringed in rainbow colour against a dark, speckled background. The cards have white, ungilded edges. Every card back shows the same black-and-white geometric diamond pattern.
The Six of Cups shows a large conifer tree with an expansive root system. The roots are coloured in yellow, red, green and orange while the rest of the card stays in black and white. The Son of Pentacles shows a deer with its head lowered on a dark background, an orange-gold moon with a pentacle symbol in the upper right corner. Card names appear in lowercase at the bottom; Roman numerals appear at the top.
The set comes with a 208-page hardcover guidebook - not a small insert, but a substantial illustrated volume written by Krans herself. It covers the cards and includes spreads that work for first-time readers as well as those with more experience.
Kim Krans is an artist, author and musician based in the United States. She created the Wild Unknown series. Her work brings together nature, symbolism and introspection.
