Birds appear in nearly every spiritual tradition as messengers. The raven as transformer, the owl as seer, the swan as bridge between worlds. This oracle by Lesley Morrison and Lisa Hunt turns that symbolism into 39 cards.

The illustrations show figures that are half human, half bird. They stand in landscapes as misty as they are clear. The watercolour technique creates soft transitions and a vintage feel.

What you see on the cards

Lisa Hunt works in layers. Each figure wears feathers, wings or a bird mask. The colours are muted tones: ochre, indigo, moss green, soft red. Backgrounds bleed into one another, making the figures appear to float.

The cards are large: 95 x 152 mm. Every detail stands out. The cardstock feels sturdy and has a smooth finish that shuffles well.

Each card carries a title and an image, no keywords. The meanings are in the 48-page guidebook. There Morrison describes for each bird which quality or theme is central.

How it works in practice

This oracle is designed for daily draws. One card per day is enough to set a direction. The guidebook offers short, clear texts without esoteric jargon.

Because the images are so figurative, you can also work without the guidebook. The body language of the figures and the symbolism of the birds speak for themselves.

Lesley Morrison is a writer and conservationist from Canada. Her texts combine spirituality with a love for animals and ecology. She has worked on projects about wildlife and its symbolic meaning.

Lisa Hunt is an illustrator and psychologist. Her watercolours have appeared in dozens of decks, including the Celtic Dragon Tarot and the Fairy Tale Tarot. Her style is recognisable: dreamlike, detailed, with a preference for mythical figures.
