Not every card names what you feel. Some name what you can do with it. The Universal Folk Oracle by Anita Inverarity links each card to a healing crystal and makes that a practical anchor point.
The imagery is colourful, pattern-rich and noticeably non-specific. Inverarity deliberately chooses not to centre any single culture. What you see are young women with rich patterns, bright colours and an open gaze. It is folkloric without being folklore.
Each of the 44 cards shows a figure in full colour, surrounded by geometric or organic patterns. The backgrounds vary: sometimes flat, sometimes decorated. The focus always remains on the figure itself.
Below each image is the name of a crystal. Those crystals are not decoration. They are meant to work with: visualise them, carry them with you, or look them up in your own collection.
The 68-page guidebook describes each card and explains the link with the crystal. There are no long philosophical essays, but there are concrete suggestions for reflection and self-care.
This is a deck that focuses on daily practice. Draw a card, read the text, look at the crystal. You can stop at the card itself, or you can let the crystal run as a thread through your day.
The deck assumes you already know how to draw an oracle card. There are no basic instructions or spreads in the guidebook. What you do get are concrete starting points for each card.
Place the card you draw next to a physical crystal if you have one. The combination of image and stone works more powerfully than the picture alone.
Anita Inverarity works from a home studio and gallery in a farmhouse on the coast of Banffshire, Scotland. She describes a turning point in her life as her 'third awakening', a phase after prolonged illness that changed her creative work.
Her work is mystical and colourful. She exhibits regularly and works full-time as an artist. This deck is her first publication with U.S. Games Systems.
Do I need to own the crystals mentioned to work with this deck?
No. The cards work without physical crystals. You can visualise the name or look up what the crystal does, but it is not a requirement.
Does the guidebook include spreads?
No. The guidebook describes the meaning of each card and gives suggestions for reflection, but contains no instructions for specific layouts.
