Zillich Tarot - watercolour in the Thoth tradition
The Thoth tradition is known for its complexity. Astrology, kabbalah, mythology and alchemy come together in a system that can feel intimidating. The Zillich Tarot follows that structure but softens it through the visual language of watercolour.
Christine Zillich drew this deck in flowing watercolour. Where Lady Frieda Harris worked for Crowley with geometric shapes and hard contrasts, Zillich chooses colour fields that blend into one another. That gives the cards a dreamlike quality without simplifying the symbolism.
What you see on the cards
The watercolour technique creates soft transitions between shades. Colours mix on the paper, making some cards feel almost abstract. Yet the structure of the Thoth tradition remains recognisable: the same titles, the same astrological connections, the same structure in the Minor Arcana.
The cards are small, 58 by 94 millimetres. That makes them easy to shuffle and practical to carry. The metal tin they come in protects them well.
The guidebook explains the astrological and kabbalistic background. No extensive narratives, but enough context to place the cards within the Thoth system.
How this deck relates to Thoth
This is not a Rider-Waite deck. The Minor Arcana have no narrative scenes but work with titles and symbols. The Major Arcana follow Crowley's numbering and naming. If you are used to RWS, you will need to shift gears.
The watercolour style makes the cards more accessible than the original Thoth deck. Colours provide a direct entry point, even before you decipher the symbolism. That works well for intuitive readings.
Draw a card and look only at the colours first. Which shade stands out? What mood does that evoke? Only then move to the title and meaning. The watercolour acts as a bridge between feeling and knowledge.
About Christine Zillich
Christine Zillich studied graphic design at Kassel College in Germany and later worked in Italy. Her background in design is visible in the composition of the cards: everything has its place, nothing is arbitrary.
Her interest in esotericism led her to the Thoth tradition. Rather than re-explaining the system, she translated it into her own visual language. That makes this deck personal without becoming idiosyncratic.

Questions we often get
Is this deck suitable if you have never worked with Thoth?
The watercolour style makes the cards visually more accessible than the original Thoth deck. Yet the symbolism remains complex. The guidebook helps, but you will need to invest time. This is not a beginner deck like a classic Rider-Waite.
How does this differ from the original Thoth deck by Crowley and Harris?
The structure and symbolism are the same, but the visual language is different. Where Harris worked with geometric forms and bright colours, Zillich uses soft watercolour transitions. That creates a different atmosphere but does not change the meanings.
