Duy Khanh Vo: the visionary artist behind internationally awarded tarot decks

Quen TarotTarot artistFine art

Ready to meet Duy Khanh Vo, the artist behind the Quen Tarot, whose cards tell a story as well as show an image?

At tarot.nl we like to highlight artists who do more than make beautiful cards: they tell meaningful stories. One of them is Duy Khanh Vo, a visual artist from Hanoi, Vietnam. His work, including the well known Quen Tarot, adds personal and visual depth to the modern tarot world.

A distinct style: powerful symbolism and expressive colours

Duy Khanh Vo, previously known as Ethan Wu, combines classical painting techniques such as watercolour, oil paint and acrylic with intuitive themes. His cards stand out through vivid colour and strong emotion. An image does not just show something. It also brings up a response in the person looking at it.

His work focuses on the link between inner desires and visions of the future. Instead of distant symbolism, he puts emotion and experience at the centre. His cards speak not only to the eye, but also to the heart.

“Each image does not merely depict something, but also brings up a response in the viewer.”

International recognition: from Vietnam to global awards

Duy Khanh Vo gained international recognition with the Walk in Red Tarot and, above all, with the Quen Tarot, which was awarded Best Tarot Deck 2022. The Quen Tarot was also shortlisted on an international platform, where Duy Khanh Vo was the only Asian artist selected. That says a lot about his own voice in a field that often looks to the West.

Art that goes beyond tarot

If you follow his work on platforms such as Saatchi Art, you will see that he cannot be pinned to one style or category. Cards such as The Empress: Red Rain, Keep going: The Fool and 2 of Swords: What should I do now? show how he keeps experimenting within the tarot form.

Besides tarot decks, he makes abstract paintings, digital portraits and work influenced by pop art. That artistic freedom gives his decks a character you rarely find elsewhere.

Several disciplines, one vision

Duy Khanh Vo is not only an artist. He also works as an interior designer, a 3D visualisation specialist and a photographer. You can see this mixed background in the composition of his work: spatial, layered and carefully thought out. Every detail seems chosen with balance and symbolism in mind.
