After Tarot - Rider-Waite continued in motion
Most tarot cards capture a moment. After Tarot begins exactly where that moment ends. The imagery draws from the classic Rider-Waite tarot, but the figures are in motion: the choice has been made, the action has started, the situation is unfolding.
The deck was developed by Pietro Alligo, founder of Lo Scarabeo, and tarot expert Corrine Kenner. The illustrations are by Giulia F. Massaglia, who keeps the classic symbolism recognisable while moving each image one step forward.
What you see on the cards
All 78 cards follow the structure of a standard tarot deck, major and minor arcana, but each image is set a fraction later than the original. Where the classic Fool still stands at the edge, in After Tarot he is already on his way. That sounds like a small shift, but it changes how you read a spread.
Massaglia's illustrations stay visually close to the familiar Rider-Waite imagery. Anyone who knows that deck will recognise each scene immediately and see at the same time what has changed. That tension between recognition and shift is what makes this deck worth using.
How to work with it
The 160-page guidebook is in English and describes the new details and their meaning for each card. Those familiar with Rider-Waite will pick up most cards quickly. Those less familiar with that deck will need a little more time to place the differences.
One natural approach: lay a card from After Tarot next to its counterpart from a Rider-Waite deck. You see directly how a situation moves from a frozen moment into what follows. The smooth finish and sturdy card stock make the cards easy to shuffle.
Use After Tarot alongside a standard Rider-Waite deck for readings where the focus is on what is already in motion, not just on the situation itself.
