Black Line Tarot - hand-drawn lines with no digital layer
Not every tarot deck looks like it just came off the drawing table. This one does. Black Line Tarot by Stef Butler is fully hand-drawn. Each card is an original line drawing in black on white, with no digital editing, no filters, no polish.
The deck follows traditional Rider-Waite-Smith symbolism, but the execution is rougher. Shadows fall differently. Faces are grimmer. The aesthetic is macabre, not in the sense of cheap horror, but in the sense of memento mori: a reminder of impermanence.
What you see on the cards
Black lines on a white background, with grey shading for depth. No colour, no decoration. The lines vary in thickness, sometimes hesitant, sometimes sharp. That is a direct result of the handwork: you see where the pen pressed harder, where a line was repeated.
That variation gives the cards a raw energy. It feels different from a digitally drawn deck, where every line flows smoothly. Here the hand of the maker stays visible.
The symbolism remains recognisable for anyone familiar with RWS. The Fool still walks toward the edge of the cliff, the Hanged Man still hangs upside down. But the expression on faces, the angles of shadows, the emphasis on bones and hands: all of it pushes the deck toward introspection and shadow work.
How it feels in use
The cards are printed on 350 gsm paper and finished with double UV coating. That makes them sturdy enough for daily use, but not so slick that they slip through your fingers. The corners are rounded. The two-piece box with removable lid is functional, not decorative.
Because there is no colour, you have to rely more on feeling. Where a colourful deck gives you an immediate mood through tone or contrast, here you have to look differently. That makes the deck slower, more focused on what is actually there than on what you see at first glance.
Lay the cards by candlelight. The shadows on the images move along, and that strengthens the macabre atmosphere of the deck.
About Stef Butler
Stef Butler works under the name Agni Prasada Burning. Her work is raw and analogue. For Black Line Tarot she deliberately chose the hand over the computer, because she wanted the energy of the moment in which a card was drawn to remain visible.
You see that in the lines. They are not perfect, and that is exactly the point.

Questions we often get
Is this deck suitable for beginners?
Yes. The symbolism is based on Rider-Waite-Smith, so the basic meanings remain recognisable. The style is darker, but that does not change the structure of the deck.
How do the cards hold up with regular shuffling?
Well. The paper is thick and the double UV coating protects against wear. The cards feel sturdy and glide smoothly.
