The Encore Tarot - C. Marchetti - pen-and-ink style on RWS foundation
Ciro Marchetti is known for his colourful digital tarot cards. This deck goes another way. The Encore Tarot is reworked in a retro pen-and-ink style with a muted colour palette. No loud colours, but earthy tones and a nostalgic design.
The deck consists of 82 cards instead of the usual 78. Those four extra cards add nuance to readings and serve as clarification for more complex questions.
What you see on the cards
Marchetti reaches back to illustrations from his earlier work and reworks them in a unified style. Pen-and-ink forms the basis, supplemented with selective colour. The red metallic edges give the whole a finished look without becoming obtrusive.
The system is Rider-Waite-Smith. The structure, order and symbolism are recognisable to anyone who has worked with RWS. What is different is the way Marchetti translates that symbolism into his own visual language: digitally designed, but with the appearance of classical printing techniques.
The cardstock is sturdy: 330 gsm. The glossy finish ensures smooth shuffling. The magnetic storage box keeps everything together.
Who this deck is designed for
This deck is suitable for beginners because it follows the RWS structure. The symbolism is accessible and the cards are easy to read. At the same time, the refined design offers enough depth for those who have been working with tarot for longer.
The four extra cards add something for those who like to experiment with more extensive spreads. They are not essential, but they do give more room to work with.
Use the extra cards as an addition to a standard spread. They work well as clarification, especially with layered questions.
