Golden Black Cat Tarot - black cats in Rider-Waite scenes
Cats appear in tarot decks often enough, but rarely this consistently. In the Golden Black Cat Tarot, the black cat takes the place of human figures in classic Rider-Waite-Smith scenes. No decoration, no side roles: the cat is the starting point.
Helena de Almeida drew all 78 cards with a clean line and a modern color palette. The result is recognisable to anyone familiar with Rider-Waite, but visually distinct.
What you see on the cards
Each card follows the compositional structure of Rider-Waite-Smith. The Magician stands before his table, the Hanged Man hangs, the Charioteer rides. But where you would normally see a human figure, there is now a black cat in the same posture, with the same attribute, in the same scene.
The linework is clear and without much shading. The colors are saturated but not harsh. Gold appears as an accent color and as a finish on the edges. The gilded edges are not just visual, but also tactile: the cards feel slightly heavier and sturdier.
The guidebook runs to 96 pages in full color. Each card has a short description with a link to the traditional meaning. No new systems, no divergent interpretations. The focus is on what the scene shows and how the cat embodies that scene.
Who this deck works for
This deck is designed for those who know the Rider-Waite structure and want to keep it, but are looking for a different visual language. The cats bring a different energy: autonomy, stillness, observation. That changes the atmosphere of a reading without affecting the layer of meaning.
The format is large (95 x 138 mm), which makes shuffling slightly harder for smaller hands. But the size makes the details clearly visible, especially in multi-card spreads.
Pull one card and notice which detail of the cat you see first. Ears, tail, gaze, posture. That detail often says as much as the card itself.
About Helena de Almeida
Helena Isabel Isidro de Almeida was born in Portugal and lives and works in Germany. Her style is characterised by clean lines and a contemporary, graphic approach to traditional symbolism. For this deck she chose not to anthropomorphise the cat, but to let it fulfill human roles.

Questions we often get
Does this deck deviate from traditional Rider-Waite meanings?
No. The structure, order and symbolism are consistent with Rider-Waite-Smith. Only the human figures have been replaced by cats. The meanings remain intact.
What does the gilded edge add to use?
The gilded edges protect the card edges from wear and give the cards a slightly heavier feel in the hand. It is both an aesthetic and practical choice.
