Il Tarocco del Mondo Nuovo by Amerigo Folchi translates that period of exploration into a tarot deck of 78 cards. The Major Arcana follow the stories of early explorers. The Minor Arcana show what the Europeans encountered there: plants, animals, pottery, everything that was new and exotic at the time.
The imagery is detailed and historically coloured. Folchi draws with the aesthetic of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries: navigation instruments, old sea charts, ships sailing through unknown waters.
The Major Arcana are linked to the great moments of the voyages of discovery. The Minor Arcana contain indigenous motifs: flora and fauna from the Americas, pottery in styles you would not encounter in Europe. It fits together without feeling forced.
The cards are printed on sturdy cardstock with a smooth finish. They measure 70 by 120 millimetres, standard tarot size. The titles are in Italian, the symbolism works without knowledge of the language.
