Nicola Allan and Juanita Benedicto created this deck together in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Product information

Faunabelle Tarot - 78 animal cards designed for children

Tarot cards for children have always been an afterthought at best. Faunabelle Tarot is the first deck built from the ground up with children as the starting point, not adults who happen to have children nearby.

The deck comes from two women based in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Nicola Allan moved from law into children's illustration. Juanita Benedicto spent years as a librarian before becoming a tarot reader and astrologer. They met at a football field where their dogs played together. Conversation followed, and eventually this deck.

What you see on the cards

Each of the 22 Major Arcana cards features a different animal ambassador. The Minor Arcana is built around four recurring animals: a dog for the suit of Wands, a goldfish for Cups, a cockatiel for Swords and a tortoise for Pentacles. These four animals carry their own storylines through themes of joy, love, mindfulness and values.

The cards are larger than standard tarot size, measuring 83 x 105 mm, printed on 350 gsm card stock with a matte finish. Card backs have gold foil details and the edges are gilded in matte gold. The box is embossed with gold foil.

How children use it

A child asks a question, draws a card and reads or hears what it suggests. The creators name examples like 'How can I get along better with my sister?' or 'How do I tell my friend something hard to say?' This is not fortune-telling. It is a tool for looking at a situation from a different angle.

The guidebook gives meanings for both upright and reversed positions, written to be accessible to children, beginners and experienced readers alike. The tone throughout is warm and compassionate rather than abstract or cryptic.

Draw one card with a child in the morning and ask together: what do you recognise here? Even very young children often have a lot to say when the image is concrete and familiar.
