Product information
VOODOO Tarot Spirit Box - tarot structure with Voodoo archetypes
In most tarot decks you meet emperors, magicians and towers. In this deck you meet Papa Legba, Erzulie and Baron Samedi. The VOODOO Tarot Spirit Box replaces the classic tarot figures with the lwa, the spirits from the Afro-Caribbean Voodoo tradition.
Fabio Listrani drew all 78 cards. His style is digital, colourful and technically detailed. The images show rituals, symbols and spirits that are part of Voodoo spirituality. The box contains the cards and a full-color guidebook of 192 pages.
How this deck is structured
The basic structure is that of a classic tarot deck: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. What changes are the archetypes. Where you normally encounter The Magician, here appears a lwa with its own story, character and ritual meaning.
The guidebook explains for each card which spirit you see, what that spirit does in the Voodoo tradition and how you can read the card. It also contains background on the Voodoo pantheons, rituals and offerings. The book works both as an introduction to the tradition and as a card guide.
What you see on the cards
The imagery is expressive and full of symbolism. Listrani uses bright colours, sharp contrasts and many ceremonial details. You see altars, vèvès (ritual patterns), animals, plants and objects that play a role in Voodoo ceremonies.
The cards are printed on sturdy cardstock and come in a luxury collectors box. The format is standard (70 x 120 mm), which makes them shuffle and lay well.
Draw one card and read in the guidebook which lwa you have drawn. Pay attention to the ritual elements on the card. That gives context you do not get with a standard tarot description.
