La Santa Muerte Lenormand - folk devotion in 36 cards

Not every Lenormand has a saint at its centre. This one does. La Santa Muerte Lenormand draws its power from Mexican folk devotion to 'Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte', a figure who stands outside the official church yet is venerated by millions for protection, justice and direct aid.

The deck is created by Dan M. Pelletier and Callie L. French. Pelletier, author and co-owner of Tarot Garden, writes not in keywords but in understanding. French has illustrated for the metaphysical market for over twenty years and is known for her work on the Rana George Lenormand.

What you see on the cards

Each of the 36 cards shows a traditional Lenormand symbol, surrounded by the imagery of the Santa Muerte cult. Candles, offerings, flowers and skeletons appear throughout. The colours are intense. The atmosphere is devotional, not macabre.

Every card carries a bilingual title: Spanish and English. 'El Jardin' next to 'The Garden', 'Los Lirios' next to 'The Lilies'. Those small shifts can colour your interpretation differently. Each card also shows a playing card insert, which opens extra numerological and cartomantic connections.

What the guidebook contains

The 104-page booklet is more than a list of meanings. It gives background on the Santa Muerte devotion, explains which candle colour corresponds to which petition, and describes the symbols from both the Lenormand tradition and Mexican folk religion.

Two spreads are included, but the emphasis lies on understanding the cards in combination. Pelletier works methodically: first see the symbol, then name your own association, only then read the text.

Draw a daily card and describe aloud what the symbol means to you before opening the guidebook. Then add two cards and notice how they colour each other.

Who this works for

This deck is designed for readers who already know how Lenormand works, or who are willing to study it. The guidebook gives enough support for beginners, but the richness of the symbolism asks for attention. You cannot read this deck superficially.

It suits people who want to work with a system that does not shy away from honesty. The Santa Muerte devotion revolves around direct help, not comfort. You hear that in the tone of the cards.

About Dan M. Pelletier and Callie L. French

Dan M. Pelletier is an author and runs Tarot Garden in Colorado with his partner. His method focuses on understanding cards rather than memorising fixed meanings. He has written several books on tarot and Lenormand.

Callie L. French has worked as a metaphysical artist for over twenty years. Her use of colour is rich and her attention to detail precise. For the Rana George Lenormand she designed all 36 cards, and that deck is still praised for the clarity of its imagery.

Questions we often get

Can I use this deck if I have never worked with Lenormand before?
Yes. The guidebook contains a clear starting guide, two practical spreads and explanations for each symbol. The deck does ask for attention, but that applies to any Lenormand system.

Why are the titles in two languages?
Spanish lies close to the source of the Santa Muerte tradition. Words like 'El Jardin' or 'Los Lirios' can evoke a different association than 'The Garden' or 'The Lilies', which enriches your interpretation.
