Marseille Vintage Tarot - classic symbolism with a weathered aesthetic
The Marseille tradition is centuries old. This deck makes that tradition look as though it has actually lived through those centuries. Creators Anna Maria Morsucci and Mattio Ottolini took the classic design and layered a weathered finish over it: the backgrounds look faded, the colours are soft and muted, the whole feel is nostalgic.
This is not an authentic reproduction of a historical deck, but a deliberate stylistic choice. The result is a tarot that feels warm and looks calm.
What you see on the cards
The imagery follows the standard Marseille structure: simple lines, clear symbols, minimal detail in the faces. The Major Arcana show the familiar figures like The Sun, The Moon and The Tower in their classic composition. The Minor Arcana consist of the four suits of Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles, with the pip cards showing only the symbols themselves, not scenes.
What stands out is the colour choice. Where traditional Marseille decks often use bright primary colours, the tones here are softer: a warm ochre yellow, a muted red, a quiet blue. The backgrounds are not white but have a beige, paper-like tint with dark edges, as though the cards have aged.
The format is compact (66 x 120 mm) and the cards are sturdy. The matte finish means they do not glare and shuffle comfortably.
How you work with it
This is not a deck for beginners used to illustrative Rider-Waite-style cards. The Minor Arcana do not show scenes, which means you need to derive the meaning of a card from the symbol and the number, not from a detailed image.
The vintage aesthetic has a practical advantage: the quiet colours and the lack of bright details make it easier to focus during a reading. Your eye is not distracted by busy imagery or sharp contrasts. Many daily readers appreciate that calm.
With this deck, pay attention to the direction in which the figures on the Major Arcana are facing. It helps you see connections in larger spreads.

Questions we often get
How does this deck differ from a standard Marseille deck?
The symbolism is the same, but the appearance is different. The colours are softer and the backgrounds look aged. That gives a calmer image, but does not change the way you read the cards.
Is there an English guidebook included?
Yes. The booklet is multilingual and includes English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. The English text is clearly written and easy to follow.
