Patrick Valenza's work is not subtle. His cards are dark, theatrical and unmistakably present. This Samhain edition of his Oracle of Black Enchantment emphasises that even further with a full orange colour palette.
The deck consists of 54 cards, all horizontally oriented. That panoramic format gives the surrealist figures and landscapes room to stretch out. The orange colours everything in the atmosphere of autumn, fire and the transition to the dark half of the year.
The imagery is surrealist and theatrical. Faceless figures, architecture that defies logic, shadows that seem just a little too long. Valenza draws like someone who takes dreams seriously.
