Power of the Runes - visual cards for the Futhark system
Reading runes with stones is often abstract. You draw a symbol and have to figure out what it means. This set of 25 cards makes it more concrete by pairing each rune with an archetypal image: a figure, a scene, a story from Germanic mythology.
The cards are designed by Thomas Vomel, who works as an artist under the name Voenix. He combines historical knowledge of the old Futhark system with detailed illustrations that directly reference gods, heroes and legends from the North.
What you see on the cards
Each card shows a rune symbol, its name, sound and number. Below that sits a mythological image: a god in a landscape, a symbolic scene, a story in one plate. The style is detailed and dramatic, with attention to attributes, facial expressions and natural elements.
The colours are muted and sombre, with plenty of grey, brown and blue. The whole set breathes the atmosphere of old sagas. The cards have a light gloss and are sturdy enough for frequent use.
How you work with them
The set contains 24 runes plus the blank rune attributed to Odin. You can use them the way you would cast rune stones: draw one card for a daily reading, or several for a more elaborate spread. The accompanying booklet explains the meanings and suggests spreads.
Because the cards contain visual images, it is easier to make an intuitive connection than with abstract symbols on stones. The illustrations give you something to hold on to when interpreting.
Draw a card in the morning and watch for the energy that belongs to that rune throughout the day. The image sticks better than a symbol alone.

Questions we often get
Do I need experience with runes to use these cards?
No. The booklet explains the meanings and the images provide visual context. This is an accessible way to start working with the Futhark system.
What is the difference between these cards and traditional rune stones?
Rune stones show only the symbol. These cards add an archetypal image, which makes it easier to get a feel for the meaning.
