Pythonissa Tarot

Pythonissa Tarot

This deck brings together Greek mythology, Jewish Kabbalah and the Mexican-Japanese background of illustrator Youkonejo into a single tarot system. The Minor Arcana deliberately avoids narrative scenes, working instead through pure numerological and elemental imagery so that the cards speak without fixing the interpretation. The bilingual guidebook, in English and Spanish, covers the Ygnis Regnum teachings and includes specialised spreads.

  • Language: English and Spanish (cards and guidebook)
  • Quality: Cobalt blue painted edges, durable card stock, two-piece box
  • Contents: 78 cards and a fully illustrated 180-page guidebook

Product information

Pythonissa Tarot - Kabbalah and Greek mythology in a bilingual deck

The Pythia was the high priestess of the Oracle of Delphi, channelling prophecies for those who sought her counsel. Illustrator Youkonejo uses her as the starting point for a tarot deck that fuses three traditions: Greek mythology, Jewish Kabbalah and her own Mexican-Japanese heritage. It is an unusual combination, and she develops it consistently down to the level of individual cards.

Every card in Pythonissa Tarot corresponds to a Hebrew letter, a Sephira on the Tree of Life and a numerological value. That Kabbalistic framework runs through the entire deck, supported by astrological correspondences and detailed reference charts in the guidebook.

What you see on the cards

The Major Arcana presents familiar archetypes under new names and with new imagery. The High Priestess becomes Pythonissa, The Moon becomes The Eclipse, and The Devil appears as Lilith. Figures drawn from both Western and Eastern traditions appear side by side in jewel-toned colour.

The Minor Arcana takes a deliberately different approach. Concrete scenes and narrative illustrations are absent. The cards show pure numerological and elemental forces across the four realms: Fire, Air, Water and Earth. Anyone used to a traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck will notice the difference immediately. It asks for a different way of reading.

The guidebook and the system

The 180-page guidebook is fully illustrated and bilingual: English and Spanish. It covers the meanings of all 78 cards, explains the Kabbalistic and numerological correspondences, and introduces the Ygnis Regnum teachings, the system through which Youkonejo studies tarot, Kabbalah and occult astrology. Specialised spreads are also included.

The thread running through the whole system is metamorphosis. As a seed must break through its shell before it can sprout, this deck frames the dissolution of the old self as a necessary step toward a new consciousness. That is not a light premise, and the deck takes it seriously.

Who this deck is built for

Anyone already familiar with Kabbalah, or willing to go into it in depth, will find a thorough framework here, with charts, Hebrew letters and Sephiroth. The guidebook assumes readiness to work within a complex system. There is enough explanation and reference material to work independently, but this is not a first-time tarot deck.

Place the Minor Arcana of this deck next to a classic RWS deck and the difference in approach immediately shows what Youkonejo means by 'free from interpretive bias'.

Questions we often get

The Minor Arcana has no narrative scenes. How does that work in practice?
The cards show numerological and elemental forces rather than concrete situations. That calls for a different approach than a fully illustrated deck: you work from symbol and number rather than from what is depicted literally. The guidebook walks through this system in detail.

What languages are the cards and guidebook in?
Both the cards and the 180-page guidebook are bilingual: English and Spanish. No other language editions of this deck exist.
