Rose Season Tarot - hand-built collages tied to the year
Most tarot decks work with symbolism that sits outside of time. The Rose Season Tarot takes a different position: each of the 56 minor arcana cards and twelve of the 22 major arcana cards is linked to a specific period of the year. You are not only reading what a card means - you are reading when.
Tara Cochrane made this deck between 2022 and 2025 in Portland, Oregon. The work is not digital: every card is a physical collage, built up from layers that show as texture and depth in the printed card. It is her second collage deck, following the Telezma Tarot from 2021, and she drew on three decades of experience in visual art and tarot to build it.
What you hold in your hands
The cards are larger than a standard Rider-Waite deck - 76 x 133 mm - giving the collages room to breathe. The deck contains 81 cards in total: the standard 78, plus two title cards that can be used as additional Hierophant and Lovers cards, and a mystery card with the card back printed on both sides. The box is a sturdy magnetic closure case in a soft off-white green.
The guidebook runs to 228 pages in black and white, without illustrations. For each card it covers the description, possible meanings, and the seasonal period it belongs to.
How the seasonal structure works
The link to the calendar year is not decorative. You can draw a card that fits the current season, or read the same card differently at different points in the year. This asks more of the reader than a standard RWS deck, but anyone familiar with tarot will find the underlying structure - which follows the classic Rider-Waite framework - straightforward to navigate.
A deck that rewards patience: the seasonal layer only becomes fully visible when you work with it across the whole year.

Questions we often get
Is this a good deck for beginners?
The deck follows the familiar Rider-Waite structure, so the framework is recognisable to anyone with basic tarot knowledge. The seasonal layer and the text-only guidebook do ask for some independence as a reader - those who are entirely new to tarot may find it easier to start with a deck that includes illustrated card descriptions before coming to this one.
What does the limited edition mean in practice?
This first edition is limited to 1,000 numbered copies. There is currently no information available about a potential second edition or reprint.
