The Roses, Dust & Ashes Oracle is a 36-card deck created by artist Stacey Williams-Ng. It draws on the symbolic imagery found on 19th-century gravestones - the visual language that people in the Victorian era used to give shape to impermanence and remembrance.
The card illustrations are rendered in sepia and brown tones. You see grave monuments, sculptures and angel-like figures, depicted as photographic or relief-style images. Each card has a number in the upper left and a name at the bottom, such as 'Influence' (card 1), 'Grace' (card 11), 'Vanity' (card 25) and 'Hope' (card 34). The card backs are red with a gold skull and crossbones centred on them.
The cards have a smooth finish and antique gold metallic edges. The storage box is shaped like a coffin, in shades of red and pink with green leaves along the top. The front shows a woman in dark clothing with a choker, surrounded by roses.
The deck comes with a guidebook called the 'little pink book', which contains card meanings and a symbol glossary. No background in funerary art or Victorian history is needed to start working with it. Stacey Williams-Ng writes that the glossary can also be taken along on a walk through a historic cemetery, to help identify the symbols in person.
