Sublime Thresholds Tarot - four centuries of painting as arcana imagery
Some tarot decks commission illustrations. Sublime Thresholds Tarot does something different: creator Nitasia Roland searched through more than 4,000 works from the public domain and selected a painting for each arcana. Baroque, Romantic, Gothic, Symbolist, from the seventeenth century through the fin de siècle. The result is a deck that moves through visual territory no single museum could contain.
Roland is a writer, poet, independent researcher and founder of Urania Press. She wrote her MFA thesis on the Sublime as a literary and philosophical concept, and that academic foundation shapes this deck visibly. Sublime Thresholds is her ninth Kickstarter deck project.
What you see on the cards
Each of the 88 cards shows a painting that Roland digitally enhanced and fitted to the tarot format. The imagery covers grandeur, awe, dramatic landscapes, the uncanny, and what Roland calls the subconscious: dreams, visions, archetypal encounters. Every card carries a Greek term, a 'Sublime Code', keywords and a short phrase.
The deck contains 22 Major Arcana, 56 Minor Arcana and 10 additional oracle cards. The only departure from the traditional RWS names: the Devil becomes 'The Trickster', depicted as a horned Pan or Bacchus-like figure. Roland explains that the devil archetype does not align with her understanding of elemental nature spirits.
Greek words and Sublime Codes
The Greek terms on the cards are not decorative. Roland connects each term to the archetypal quality of that card. The 'Sublime Codes' are categories she developed herself to distinguish between varieties of the sublime experience, drawing on her thesis about philosophers including Longinus, Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant.
The mini guidebook in the tuck box explains the meaning of each code and Greek word. A full companion guidebook offers longer divinatory interpretations for each card, accompanied by poetry from Keats, Blake, Rilke, Rimbaud, Mary Shelley, Dylan Thomas, Angela Carter and others.
Shadowscapes and shadow work
Roland describes this as a 'Shadowscapes' deck. The paintings do not reach for comfort or clarity. They move through what is uncertain, dark, overwhelming or mysterious. That makes the deck suited to shadow work, a term Roland herself uses for examining what lies beneath the surface of consciousness.
The imagery is dense and tense, especially compared to more classical or soft-toned tarot cards. Those familiar with clean line illustrations will encounter something different here: paintings with deep shadows, dramatic light, figures in extremis.
The mini guidebook fits inside the tuck box and is compact by design. The extended interpretations for each card are in the companion guidebook, which is available separately.
About Nitasia Roland
Nitasia Roland runs Urania Press, a design studio she founded in 2020. She has previously published with Weiser Books and released decks including Tarot Chimera, Tarot Emblemata Gold, Starlore Astronomical Tarot and ASTRONOMIA Oracle. Her work combines a background in creative writing with a broad interest in esoterica, poetry and art history.
Her MFA thesis on the Sublime, written between 2017 and 2019, was the direct starting point for this deck. The 'Sublime Codes' she developed there form the organising principle behind the card selection.

Questions we often get
Does the deck come with a full guidebook?
The deck includes a mini guidebook that fits inside the tuck box. It covers keywords, phrases, Sublime Codes and the meaning of the Greek terms. Extended divinatory interpretations for each card are in the companion guidebook, which is available separately.
What does it mean that this is a 'Shadowscapes' deck?
Roland uses that term herself to describe imagery that works through the emotional, psychological and metaphysical. The paintings were not chosen to comfort or illuminate in a straightforward way. They are selected to support shadow work: examining dreams, archetypal patterns and what lies beneath conscious awareness. The visual tone matches that intention. Intense, dark, dramatic.
